More than a dozen states across the northern U.S. may have an opportunity to see the aurora borealis on New Year’s Eve, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA forecast a Kp index of five on a scale of nine for Wednesday night, suggesting the northern lights may be visible as far south as northern Iowa.
